A Smile Before Dying

duty called

you smiled

and then the night wind

drove your airplane

into the ground

east to west

east to west

the passing of days

gone but not forgotten

one life affects

so many others

interlocked

and interwoven

like roots that work

themselves deeply down

into the ground with

the passing of years

they anchor the life

of a tree for generations

shadow of a shadow

echo of an echo

we all know that

one day too we

will be forgotten

with time

in this life

you only asked one thing

for all of those you loved

to give them one last smile

before you died
